A Cloister is a rectangular courtyard surrounded by covered walkways which, when attached to a church, generally indicates that a monastic order is, or was formerly, in residence. The term cloistered may also reference the lifestyle led by members of a closed religious order. During the events of The National Service Journal, a cloister attached to the cathedral of Northanger Town was the location in which the Ankoù was sealed. Several underground passageways formerly a part of the Northanger Abbey are erroneously named "cloisters" by the National Service trainees excepting the members of Echo Company.
