The Black Journal (alternatively titled Le Carnet Noir) is the second title in the series Les Histoires Duchemin. The story revolves around the exploits of Aimée Duchemin, Sylvain Dieudonné, Sybil Françaix and her brother Térence as they leave Sauveterre for Irinie to chase their dreams. There, they encounter many of the members of Echo Company, among them Llyr Bleddyn and Erroll de Wardes, and get into several adventures (...and misadventures), including a personal invitation to the palace from Queen Cecily herself.

The title refers to a journal filled with black paper that may be written upon with strange white ink created by an Iriniais inventor that was sent to Aimée sometime after her National Service stint with a letter of invitation enclosed with four tickets for a ferry to Port Cherrytown, a major southern Iriniais city and one of few remaining ports in the Kingdom of Wistery, alongside four stamped visas and a set of passports for Aimée and her friends. Although the letter is not signed, it is later revealed to have been written by Erroll at the request of his grandmother.
